Dolomites: Cortina d'Ampezzo and Val Badia
Dolomite peaks, Ladin culture and Alpine hospitality: Cortina d'Ampezzo and Val Badia, from winter skiing to summer in the mountains.
The Dolomites: Life at a Higher Altitude
In the morning, pale rock faces rise above the forests; at sunset, they glow pink in the phenomenon known as enrosadira. Cortina d'Ampezzo, in Veneto, and Val Badia, in South Tyrol, reveal two sides of the Dolomites. Nine mountain systems here have held UNESCO World Heritage status since 2009, recognised for their exceptional scenery and geological significance. The Tofane and Cristallo rise around Cortina, while Val Badia stretches between the landscapes of the Sella, Puez and Odle groups.
Cortina retains the character of a historic Alpine resort, its story closely associated with the 1956 Winter Olympics. In Val Badia, Ladin culture lives on in the language, traditional farmsteads and village customs; in the upper valley, Corvara, Colfosco and the villages of Badia form the Alta Badia area. Winter brings skiing in the Dolomiti Superski areas; summer opens up paths, pastures and mountain huts, with each day shaped by the weather and altitude.
